I commute to my work at a school whenever the roads are safe ( ie ice and snow free ) In southern Ontario that depends on the weather -- last year I made it to Dec 19. This year, not. Usually I can start in late March, early April, and go until November. Cold is not an issue- I wear a balaclava under my helmet plus good gloves.
I am 58 and try to stay active.
Only that spring is a lovely time-- the warming days, the birds, Lake Ontario a steel blue under the spring sun.... I have a short commute, so much so that I can return home for lunch, but I add a long weekend ride of 40 to 50 kms on Sundays back into the rolling hills behind the lake. My bike is a Canadian made hybrid-- perfect for both the commute and the Sunday ride, which sometimes entails gravel roads.
